New Riding Trucks for the Portable Track

We are now using our new riding trucks on the Portable Track. The general opinion is that these are more comfortable, smoother running, and most important to the gang who have to lift them on and off the trailer, they are definitely lighter than the old ones.

Our intention now is to replace the trucks on our permanent track, hopefully as successfully!

A couple of photos taken at Croft Carnival (7 July, 2006):

A quiet spell before the onslaught.

Again, Steve is the driver.
Smart decoration courtesy of our resident artist, Mr David (Fozzy) Foster.

The remaining shots, showing details of the trucks, were taken during their construction.

The first of the new trucks approaching completion. Seat needs upholstering, brake lever still to be made and fitted, then it will be ready for action.
View of the truck from below. As it will only be used on the portable track, which is straight, we don't need complex bogies.

Close up shot of the suspension/wheel/brake assembly.
Club President checking the truck for stability.

Working on the second truck, which is not far behind.

The trucks now have brake levers installed. Here you see the brake lever (with the black knob) and a locking lever. The locking facility is only currently provided on the drivers truck. In order to lock the brake you just pull back the locking lever. Pushing both levers forward releases the lock.

Top (or more correctly bottom, as the truck was upside down) view of the levers. The locking lever is screwed onto the fixed hub so that, when it is rotated, it unscrews and moves towards the fibre washer which then locks against the brake lever. Apologies for the quality here, must have managed to focus on the ground instead of the lever.

Here we see the inside end of the brake lever assembly. The brakes are operated by Bowden cable (bicycle brake cable) which can be seen heading off to the rear brakes.

Another view of the inside end of the brake lever assembly.

This is the rear axle with brake cable at top right coming from the brake lever. It simply passes through the brake arms and then continues off bottom right to the front brakes.

This shot is of the brakes on the other truck which has the brake lever at the back (for the guard). As a result it's the mirror image with the lever at bottom, and the brake cable coming in at top to the rear brake assembly (front on the other truck). This arrangement means there is no need for any balancing arrangement, both brakes will operate equally automatically.
A Day out with the Portable Track
